NEW YORK CITY - I covered the evening session at the Big East Tournament. For Rutgers, it was simply an inability to hit shots. They defended well, holding Notre Dame star forward Luke Harangody to 7 points on 3 of 17 shooting. But Fred Hill’s team could not convert their available opportunities. "A microcosim of our season," Hill said.
A 42% defensive eFG% will win you games...but not when you shoot 36%.
The second game was a "grind it out affair" according to Seton Hall’s Bobby Gonzalez. The tempo bears him out.
Both teams took good care of the ball. The Hall’s superlative TO rate (TO%) plus a 57% eFG% (USF was 51%), contributed to the gaudy 1.26 PPP. Jeremy Hazell led all scorers with 23 points.
