World University Games 2011 -- USA Downs Mexico

USA 108 Mexico 67
The USA men's team opened their play in Group D with a solid 41 point win over Team Mexico. The Mexicans stayed with USA through the first quarter as Mexico took a two point lead into the second 10 minute period. The Americans used the second quarter to overtake the Mexicans and establish a lead they would not yield, building a six point margin 43-37, which they took into the locker room at the half. Coming out of the half time break, the Americans used a 17-9 run, fueled by Draymond Green and John Jenkins, who scored four and five points respectively during the run. The Mexicans rallied briefly, but could get no closer than 12 through the end of the game. Team USA took a 21 point lead into the fourth quarter, and like the two preceding quarters, simply added another 20 points to their margin.

Pittsburgh's point guard Ashton Gibbs logged 25 minutes and scored a game-high 20 points on 7-12 (2-3, 5-9) shooting from the floor and a perfect 4-4 from the line. Four of his teammates Trevor Mbakwe (Minnesota -- 12 points), Marcus Denmon (Missouri -- 11 points), Orlando Johnson (UC Santa Barbara -- 10 points) and Draymond Green (Michigan State -- 10 points) each scored 10 or more points. Mbakwe made it a double-double as he also snagged a game-high 10 rebounds (7-3-10). Gabriel Giron paced Team Mexico with 13 points on 4-11 (0-2, 4-9) shooting from the floor and 5-7 from the line. The pace, 82.3 possessions, has to be driving USA Coach Matt Painter crazy as his Boilermakers averaged a very middle-of-the-road (for Division 1) 67.1 possessions last season. The team handled it well, dominating the boards, forcing turnovers allowing Mexico to score on only 37.2% of their possessions. Team USA held Mexico to 0.78 points per possession (ppp), due in very large measure (see Mexico's eFG% and PPWS above) to an inability to convert their shots (and get to the line on a miss). Indeed Team Mexico converted 23-47 (0.489) on their two point attempts and 3-15 (0.200) on their three's. The score by quarters...
